Kenosha Pass Hike - Jan 21, 2001

This was the first hike/qrp expedition of the new millenium.  I took a short hike with Dan, N0BN, to a ridge just above Kenosha Pass in the Rocky Mountains.  Elevation approximately 11500 feet.   The hike was a short one... probably no more then 1/2 mile each way.  Temperature was in the 20's and the wind was blowing so it was pretty chilly and there was quite a lot of snow around.  But... the sun was out and it was a beautiful day.  I was going for the smallest station I could pack.  I took an sw20+, 10 AA battery pack, mini headphones, whiterock paddle with built in tick keyer and for an antenna I had a 33' piece of 22 guage wire that I tuned with a little tuner built into a 35mm film canister.  The whole thing fit into a little hip back about 6" by 6" by 3".  I worked one station in Albany, Oregon.  At first both of us reported 599 rst's but after about 15 minutes of talking qsb got us and our signals faded away till we could not hear each other.  I quit then because my ungloved 'sending' hand was bright red and ready for a glove.  While I operated 20 meters Dan roamed the top of the ridge with his 2 meter hand held looking for a site where he could hit a repeater well enough that he could run the weekly net from that location in the future.  All in all a successful trip for the first of 2001.
