Popup Camper Camping Trip - June 30/July 2
View Log - Log of all contacts made
This was the Slagel family annual excurision to Angostora for a week of water skiing, sitting in the sun and the occasional beer. Angostora is a big (approximately 1 mile wide by 4 miles long) dam located about 10 miles south east of Hot Springs, SD. Its a very nice recreation area and best of all, very uncrowded. We camp right next to the water and beach the boat just below the campsite. Had a great time!! Most of the time, Keith, WU0H, was camping with us in his pop up trailer.
I took along a new Sierra multiband qrp rig and so I needed to come up with a new multiband antenna. I got out an old fan dipole I had and strung it up in the trees. It had 20/40 meter elements and I built several clip on extensions so I could load the dipole for 15, 17 & 30 also. I borrowed an mfj antenna analyzer and first I used that to tune and prune the antenna. Generally, my best operating was on 20 meters. I also had a couple of 30 & 40 contacts.
Here's the camper and a view of
the lake.
There's the marina right across from our
campsite. Also a little beach front bar just on the other side of the
marina.
At the campsite and the XYL, Terry (what
a babe), takin' care of dishes and lettin' me know what she thinks of it.
Here's
the little harmonics, Greg (16 yrs) and Kelly (13 yrs).
Here's what the antenna
looked like on a cloudy day. You can see a string that was strung between
two trees. It supported teh center insulator which had two elements
(20 & 40) coming off of each side. In the middle you see
the mini-coax coming straight down.
Now we get to the
site of my long time partner, Keith Doughty, WU0H. Here he is showin'
off his QTH. Notice the antenna between the trailer and the jeep. He
was using a 20 meter ground plane built from a 20' crappie fishing pole.
I've got a similar outfit and it works like a champ.
Here's a better shot of the antenna. He and I make a habit of
sitting under the antennas and admiring them (beer in hand). Any good
ham can understand the beauty of a portable antenna :-).
Whiskey United Zero Hotel (WU0H) all grins for some darn reason............
