Terry and I had got very little chance for any backpacking this year and decided we had to do a quick overniter just so we could say we had gotten out this year and... it just happened that qrp afield was this weekend! We decided to go to a place that is on Seg 9 of the Colorado Trail. We had passed it once as we hiked that segment and thought how beautiful it was. I had returned later to do the 2003 Bumblebee contest. This is just a beautiful place to be. We drove in to the St Kevin's trailhead from where it is only about a 2 or 3 mile hike to the site. Once there, you're treated to a small lake surrounded by, what I think are, 13000 ft peaks. The weather was chilly. As soon as the sun went down, which happens early because of the 13000 ft peaks towering to your west, it got cold quick. We had a small fire for about an hour, then doused it and crawled into the tent. It froze that night, evidenced by the small bit of ice at the side of the lake, but we stayed plenty warm in the tent. I worked the qrp afield contest for about 30 minutes that afternoon. Then worked a few casual contacts that evening and again in the morning. Following are pictures:
